Performance coaches take the next step

Seventeen ESD staff from across Oregon just completed an intense three-day certification training on the road to becoming "performance coaches." To get this far, coaches attended a three-day leadership institute last fall, then received six months of coaching themselves.

To complete the process, this cadre of coaches has nine more months of peer coaching, follow-up webinar sessions and one more day of intense training in the "Renewal Coaching" process. The Renewal Coaching framework provides these coaches with the skills and strategies to help organizations clarify their vision, establish strategies, and create action plans to execute those strategies.

The Oregon DATA Project, through the ODE, provided the funding for this experience and is looking to these performance coaches to support and sustain the work being done to close the achievement gap in Oregon.

The "What Works Clearinghouse"

Oregon educators don't have the time, money, or resources to experiment with what might work. They need to know what has worked in education, and why. The "What Works Clearinghouse" is a great way for educators, policymakers and the public to get that information. The clearinghouse is a central and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education. It provides reviews and reports on existing studies of interventions in topic areas that range from adolescent literacy to character development to middle school math. The site provides a set of standards that follow scientifically valid criteria for determining the effectiveness of these interventions. That saves time, money, and helps avoid the risks of experimentation. Check out this valuable resource at www.whatworks.ed.gov.

Technical training dates set

Work is progressing rapidly on the technical training to be offered by the Oregon DATA Project. The first component of the training is a short presentation examining the need for quality data in today’s educational setting. It will be offered to various audiences throughout the school year. The second component, a one-day training on how to implement a culture of data quality, will be rolled out this fall at eight ESDs around the state; please check the flier for dates in your area. The third component of technical training, focusing on online support documents and tool sets related to state collection files, is in the development phase.

National report features DATA Project

The Oregon DATA Project is featured in a research paper by the national Data Quality Campaign (www.dataqualitycampaign.org). The report identifies professional development as an essential element of success for data systems, and Oregon is singled out as one of the few states currently providing that training. "Oregon has developed two primary data system training efforts to date," says the report. "The first training program is aimed at instructional professional development, while the second is more of a technical strand for district data submitters."
